Ordinary Time

Pause

A prayer for peace:

Quiet me, O Lord. Calm my mind. Still my hands. Remove any worries from my heart. I want to give you my full attention. Slow me down so that I can hear your voice and see you at work in my life today. Amen.

Listen

“I have much more to say to you, but you can’t handle it now. However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you in all truth. He won’t speak on his own, but will say whatever he hears and will proclaim to you what is to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and proclaim it to you."

John 16:12-14

Think

Even after years of teaching his disciples, Jesus knew that they still weren’t ready to hear some lessons before he died. But he promised that his Spirit, “the Spirit of truth,” would reveal more to them when they were ready.

God could have shared the Ten Commandments with Adam or Abraham, but God waited until Moses to give it the people. Perhaps previous generations wouldn’t have been able to bear the Law.

When you were younger you may have seen God in a certain way, but now you may have new insights into the fullness of God and God’s world. God is teaching me lessons today that I was not ready for ten years ago. As you grow in faith, you will be ready to learn deeper, harder truths. You may find that the Spirit reveals to you that your previous ideas about the Bible, Church, Jesus, and others were incomplete — or maybe even wrong. Don’t be surprised when your understandings of important things change as you walk in the Spirit. God is still speaking.

Pray

Spirit of truth, shine like a light on your word — and my world — today. Help me to discover meanings and treasures that were once hidden from me. With your power I can bear the lessons you would teach me. Amen.

Go

God’s Spirit is with you right now, closer than the air you are breathing. You don’t have to chase after God; simply be with God today. Let God’s Spirit fill you and guide you. Take joy in knowing that God is walking with you, and that you can walk in God’s Spirit.
