Ordinary Time
I want to walk as a child of the light.
I want to follow Jesus.
Kathleen Thomerson in
“I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light” (1970)
Don’t do anything for selfish purposes, but with humility think of others as better than yourselves. Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others.
Philippians 2:3-4
One of the important aspects of walking the path is understanding that we are part of a wider community of people; that we need each other and we need to take care of each other.
Walking “with humility” means that we aren’t putting ourselves at the center of the story. Instead, we are putting “us” at the center.
Humility doesn’t just happen. It is a life-long practice, a concept we have to embrace every day, teaching ourselves to think of others first.
In reality, there’s a hidden wisdom in this: when we watch out for what is better for others, we are also watching out for ourselves as, through community, our lives are deeply intertwined.
Wendy Johnson
Question to Ponder:
Whose lives are deeply intertwined with yours and how can you “watch out” for them today?
Creator God, I want the path of my life to be other-focused.
Today, help me to move from “me” to “we” in my thoughts and actions.
Amen.
The path is made by walking.
Antonio Machado in the poem,
“Traveler, There is No Path” (1917)
