I want to walk as a child of the light.
I want to follow Jesus.

Kathleen Thomerson in
“I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light” (1970)

Listen

Adopt the attitude that was in Christ Jesus:

Though he was in the form of God, he did not consider being equal with God something to exploit. But he emptied himself by taking the form of a slave and by becoming like human beings. When he found himself in the form of a human, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God highly honored him and gave him a name above all names, so that at the name of Jesus everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth might bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:5-11

Think

Humbleness, humility, emptying yourself… these are all words we hear in Scripture as examples of how to walk our path with God.

How difficult this can be in reality!

We do not live in a society that embraces humbleness. Everywhere we look we see boasting, swagger, showing off. People saying “look at me!”

But that’s just surface-level – the stuff that gets attention on social media.

Today, make it a practice to look around you. Watch closely. If you look, you’ll see everyday ways people are quietly helping each other.

See the grocery cashier helping someone lift their grocery bags. See the teacher spending extra time after school with one student. See the volunteer helping check out books at the library.

As followers of Christ, this is who we’re called to be. We are called to empty ourselves of pride, to be humble. To use our lives in service to others.

This is the path.

Question to Ponder:

Where can you watch for quiet helpers today?

Pray

Creator God, help me to empty myself today of excessive ego, pride, and boastfulness.

Help me to see the quiet helpers.

Help me to be a quiet helper.

Amen.

Go

The path is made by walking.

Antonio Machado in the poem,
“Traveler, There is No Path” (1917)
