Heaven is declaring God’s glory; the sky is proclaiming his handiwork. One day gushes the news to the next, and one night informs another what needs to be known. Of course, there’s no speech, no words— their voices can’t be heard— but their sound extends throughout the world; their words reach the ends of the earth.

Psalm 19:1-4a

Think

Radio host Thom Hartmann tells a story about when he was 7 or 8 years old sitting with an old farmer drinking a glass of lemonade. He said the farmer leaned over and said, “Look at how blue the sky is.” Thom looks and nods, “Yeah.” The farmer says, “Look how green the grass is and how it’s moving. Look at the trees moving in the wind. See those birds flying over there? You see the dust blowing from the cars going down over there?” Thom nods, “Yeah.” Then the farmer leans over like he’s going to give Thom this big secret. The farmer says with a strong whispering voice, “It’s all alive!”

Today’s reading from the Psalms encourages us to see God’s glory being praised all around us. The sky, the grass, the trees, the birds, the dust, everything. Sometimes we need to turn off the noise and just take in God’s presence all around us. Take some time today, look around, join in the praise – because it’s all alive!

Amazing God, thank you for reminders of your goodness and glory that surround me. Give me pause to embrace them all and honor you with my praise. Amen.
