What’s in your backpack? What are you carrying?
We sometimes carry things that aren’t ours to carry. In these moments, set those things aside.
Today, choose to carry justice, kindness, and humbleness.
Put aside all bitterness, losing your temper, anger, shouting, and slander, along with every other evil. Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to each other, in the same way God forgave you in Christ. Therefore, imitate God like dearly loved children. Live your life with love, following the example of Christ.
Ephesians 4:31-5:2a
A few weeks ago, I rushed across campus to help with freshman orientation. Orientation was in a new place this year, and it was twice as far to walk as last year! As much as I love to walk, the hot and humid summer day meant I was sweaty and thirsty by the time I finally arrived. I was also feeling stressed. As I approached my group’s table, a guy turned around, offered a big smile, and handed me a cold bottle of water. He said they were giving them away earlier, and he grabbed one for me. I was amazed! His small act of kindness made my day.
Our scripture tells us to be kind and compassionate, to imitate God, and live with love. These can sound like high standards. It’s important to remember that small acts of kindness make a huge difference. We all want to know that someone cares about us, that we are valued. When we do even a small act of kindness for someone, it shows that person that they matter.
