Ordinary Time

Pause

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Mary Oliver in “The Summer Day”

Listen

“The rich man said, ‘Then I beg you, Father, send Lazarus to my father’s house. I have five brothers. He needs to warn them so that they don’t come to this place of agony.’ Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets. They must listen to them.’ The rich man said, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will change their hearts and lives.’ Abraham said, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the Prophets, then neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”

Luke 16:27-31

Think

You already have access to everything you need to live a life of faith.

As residents of the 21st century we have Scripture, the words of the prophets, and the witness of the saints. We have centuries of tradition. We have education, reason, community. And, unlike the rich man and his brothers in this reading, we have a risen Christ who reaches beyond death to invite us to change our hearts and our lives.

Regardless, these gifts will not touch the depth of your soul unless you listen; unless you embrace them, explore, practice, and live them to the best of your ability every day.

How is your faith calling you to live? What are your goals and intentions for this day, this week, this month… this life?

Write them down, pray over them, revisit them regularly and set aside time to seal them onto your heart through practice, be it prayer, meditation, yoga, journaling, study, or conversation.

Do not trick yourself into waiting for a spectacular miracle to happen right in front of you.

You have everything you need.

Pray

Listening to the Spirit, I have everything I need to create a life of faith.

God, help me take the time today to remember who I am.

Amen.

Go

Go and live fully and wholly in the places you are called this day.
