I will praise you on the mountain, and I will praise you when the mountain is in my way. You’re the summit where my feet are, so I will praise you in the valleys all the same.
“Highlands (Song of Ascent)” by Hillsong UNITED
How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord of heavenly forces! My very being longs, even yearns, for the Lord’s courtyards. My heart and my body will rejoice out loud to the living God!
Yes, the sparrow too has found a home there; the swallow has found herself a nest where she can lay her young beside your altars, Lord of heavenly forces, my king, my God! Those who live in your house are truly happy; they praise you constantly.
Psalm 84:1-4
If you’ve ever been lost, you have likely learned the importance of looking up. If you’re in an unfamiliar city, looking up to the iconic buildings that make up the skyline can help you get your bearings. If you get lost in the woods, the sun and stars will often provide you with a better sense of direction.
Looking “up” can also help us when we’re navigating unfamiliar terrain as we follow God’s call. The psalmist remembers what it feels like to be in the presence of God in the temple. Even on days when they are far from the courts of the temple, that memory still orients the psalmist and gives them a sense of direction. Those experiences of God’s presence have become their north star that will guide them towards God. The memories that we hold closest matter. If we remember the joy of God’s presence, we will always seek to find our way home.

Question to Ponder:
What experience of God’s presence continues to shape how you respond to God’s call on your life?
God, remind me again of the ways you have walked alongside me. Thank you for walking with me through…
As I meditate on you, draw me once again into your presence.
Amen.
I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus.
