I will praise you on the mountain, and I will praise you when the mountain is in my way.  You’re the summit where my feet are, so I will praise you in the valleys all the same.

“So now, revere the Lord. Serve him honestly and faithfully. Put aside the gods that your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt and serve the Lord. But if it seems wrong in your opinion to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Choose the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But my family and I will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:14-15

Think

What’s the best day to set a new course for your life? Many will say January 1st, because the start of a new year offers us a blank slate. It’s easy to believe that on a special day like New Year’s, we will suddenly have some supernatural conviction or clarity that we’ve never had before to finally understand where we’re heading and how to get there. We’re often disappointed when these days pass without any real change in our lives.

Joshua offers a different perspective. After reminding the people of all that God has led them through, Joshua calls them to “choose today whom you will serve.” When it comes to committing our lives to God, there’s no app to download, strict regimen to commit to, or special date to mark the transition. Simply choose today. Don’t overcomplicate it. Don’t build it up in your mind and then never live it out. Make today the day you change your heading.

Question to Ponder:

What do you feel called to do that you can choose today to step into?

Pray

God who calls me into a deeper life of love in you, give me faith to not delay my commitment to you. Remind me of who you are. Help me to trust that I am ready to go where you will lead me.

Amen.

Go

I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus.
