Ordinary Time
Take a moment. Close your eyes and mind to everything around you. Let the noise of the world fade.
“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
In the quiet of this time, rest in that promise.
Then the people answered, “God forbid that we ever leave the Lord to serve other gods! The Lord is our God. He is the one who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. He has done these mighty signs in our sight. He has protected us the whole way we’ve gone and in all the nations through which we’ve passed. The Lord has driven out all the nations before us, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.”
Joshua 24:16-18
Do you ever stop to think about your life? What you’ve been through – both good and bad? How things have unfolded? Maybe this is an old guy thing. I’m 63, and every now and again I get reflective. To be honest, I do this too seldom. Hey, water passes under the bridge of life for all of us, young and old. I had a teacher once tell my class, “Time is passing, but some of you aren’t.”
In today’s verses, the people of Israel respond to Joshua’s question, “Whom will you serve?” with reflective remembrance of just what God had done for them. They recalled a God who led them from slavery, performed great signs of reassurance, and protected them throughout their travels. They replied with certainty, “We too with serve the Lord, because he is our God.” (v. 18)
My guess is that a little reflection about your life will reveal a God who is present… a God who cares… a God worth serving. What is your response today? Whom will you serve?

Thank you for your presence, God. Help me to see and lean into you in all things. Make me reflective about your hand in my life. Amen.
Go from this time asking, “Whom will I serve today?”
Remember, you’re not a random accident. God, the author of all things, started your story and has your back.
God is worthy of your service.
