Back to School
Take a slow, steady, deep inhale through the nose, hands on stomach to feel your belly rise.
Take a slower, steady, deep exhale through the mouth.
Repeat the slow breathing pattern and say:
GOD IS – as you breathe in.
WITH ME – as you breathe out.
One final time, GOD IS … WITH ME … allowing your body to reflect your heart’s desire and mind’s focus to pause with the Holy One.
“Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you.”
Luke 6:31
The Golden Rule is a universal moral principle transcending religion and culture. It’s uncomplicated; even a five-year-old gets it.
But there’s an inherent problem with this directive, and it’s in the assumption. The assumption is that everyone subscribes to this ethic, that this is a shared morality exchanged among all citizens in the same society. Sadly, this assumption appears to be false. With the rise of violence in our local communities, we know that people are not treating each other the way they ought to be treated. Basic civility is rotting away, and fear is on the rise.
I wonder if there might be a better way to rephrase the Golden Rule. Imagine your classroom or group of friends being assigned the task to do exactly that. I wonder what metaphors or phrases might better capture the heart of the Golden Rule: to choose kindness and respect over the uglier, hurtful ways. It’s an assignment worth considering. An idea worth posting, tweeting, or threading today. The revised Golden Rule: go.

Question to Ponder:
How would you rephrase the Golden Rule in a way that speaks specifically to your context?
God of universal love, I confess I have trouble treating people the way I want to be treated.
Forgive me, and help me to do better.
Shape my faithfulness so that I might act in the spirit of your love that cares for everyone.
Amen.
May God the Creator bless you and keep you safe today.
May Jesus the Christ smile upon you and be gracious towards you.
May the Spirit of Love lead you along the path of wisdom and truth.
And all of God’s people say — Amen.
