Pause

Take a slow, steady, deep inhale through the nose, hands on stomach to feel your belly rise.

Take a slower, steady, deep exhale through the mouth.

Repeat the slow breathing pattern and say:

GOD IS – as you breathe in.
WITH ME – as you breathe out.

One final time, GOD IS … WITH ME … allowing your body to reflect your heart’s desire and mind’s focus to pause with the Holy One.

Listen

As Jesus continued on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at a kiosk for collecting taxes. He said to him, “Follow me,” and he got up and followed him. As Jesus sat down to eat in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners joined Jesus and his disciples at the table.

Matthew 9:9-10

Think

There was (and still is) something about Jesus that drew in even the most unsavory characters. We hear that in today’s story: the “tax collectors and sinners” keep company with Jesus, sharing a meal and conversation with the Son of God. The “tax collectors and sinners” must have sensed Jesus was worth their time, that Jesus would listen and not judge, that to be around Jesus meant they could be themselves. Jesus gave off non-judgmental vibes. All were (and still are) truly welcome with Jesus.

I wonder what kind of vibes you give off. Even for the most shy among us, I wonder if people sense a kind spirit, a non-judgmental attitude, and sincere friendliness from you. It doesn’t take much. Some courage, sure, but most of all an authentic way of being a person created in faith, hope, and love. May these be the vibes we share this day and in the days to come.

Question to Ponder:

Why do you think Jesus attracted the “tax collectors and sinners”?

Pray

God who does not judge but saves, thank you that all are welcome with you.

Give me courage to be a welcoming light rather than to cast a shade on the “tax collectors and sinners.”

Help me to reflect the care and attention that Jesus gives to all.

Amen.

Go

May God the Creator bless you and keep you safe today.

May Jesus the Christ smile upon you and be gracious towards you.

May the Spirit of Love lead you along the path of wisdom and truth.

And all of God’s people say — Amen.
