Ordinary Time

Pause

Close your eyes and breathe deeply.

The Psalmist says to “Enjoy the LORD, and he will give what your heart asks” (Psalm 37:4).

What does your heart ask today? What is your desire?

Hold that thought as we explore this week’s theme of wisdom and wealth.

Listen

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he acted cleverly. People who belong to this world are more clever in dealing with their peers than are people who belong to the light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves so that when it’s gone, you will be welcomed into the eternal homes.”

Luke 16:8-9

Think

In this Bible translation, the manager is praised for acting “cleverly.” Another common translation says he acted “shrewdly.” The word “shrewd” can carry a less than positive connotation. In fact, some may think it is as a negative attribute. Actually, people who are shrewd possess and apply decisive judgement. One synonym for shrewd is “wise.” I think today’s verse calls us to use our wisdom and wealth shrewdly.

You may not feel very wise or wealthy. That said, I bet you exercise choices with your resources, time, and talents. A few years back, a Sunday School teacher challenged me to use my talents shrewdly. She guided me through a self-assessment that identified me as both enjoying and having some abilities as a writer. Her nudging encouraged me to seek faith-based writing opportunities, including writing for d365.

I’m wondering what talents or resources you have? Take some time to assess your abilities today and consider how you could use them shrewdly for God’s purposes. I’m betting it will be time well spent.

What of the wisdom from above? First, it is pure, and then peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good actions, fair, and genuine.
