Ordinary Time
Take a deep breath right now.
Notice one thing you see,
one thing you hear,
one thing your body is touching.
You are here in this place. God is here with you, too.
Yes, these sorts of people will never be shaken; the righteous will be remembered forever! They won’t be frightened at bad news. Their hearts are steady, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are firm; they aren’t afraid. In the end, they will witness their enemies’ defeat. They give freely to those in need. Their righteousness stands forever. Their strength increases gloriously.
Psalm 112:6-9
Never be shaken! Be steady! Firm! Strong! Stand forever! This sounds like a very strong house with a very strong foundation. My kids have been reading about the three little pigs and the wolf who tries to blow the house down. “Don’t even think about it,” the pig says to the wolf. “This house is made of brick!” I’d like to be that kind of pig, er, person — the kind of person who tells bad news and enemies, “Don’t even think about it!”
When we trust in the Lord, the Psalmist says we will be steady, unafraid, and incapable of being shaken. We will have a strong foundation. We will be centered and clear, ready to receive God’s wisdom, and ready to give freely to those in need. This does not mean life will be easy. It does not mean we won’t struggle with grief or adversity. But it does mean that we will be able to sense God’s presence with us more clearly, giving us increasing strength to face life’s wolves.

Wise God, give me the wisdom to think clearly and the grace to see you clearly today.
Make me steady.
Amen.
As you go today, remember that God is ready to share wisdom.
Reach out your hands and accept it.
