Ordinary Time

Pause

Take a deep breath right now.

Notice one thing you see,
one thing you hear,
one thing your body is touching.

You are here in this place. God is here with you, too.

Listen

What we say is wisdom to people who are mature. It isn’t a wisdom that comes from the present day or from today’s leaders who are being reduced to nothing. We talk about God’s wisdom, which has been hidden as a secret. God determined this wisdom in advance, before time began, for our glory. It is a wisdom that none of the present-day rulers have understood, because if they did understand it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory! But this is precisely what is written: God has prepared things for those who love him that no eye has seen, or ear has heard, or that haven’t crossed the mind of any human being.

1 Corinthians 2:6-9

Think

Catching wind that the church in Corinth was divided and arguing about which members were wiser and more spiritual, Paul wrote this letter reminding them that true wisdom isn’t just about knowing a lot. And it’s certainly not about high-profile leaders knowing the most — it is indeed a grave mistake to equate political power with God’s approval and wisdom. No, the kind of wisdom God gives does not come from worldly certainty or political power. In fact, Paul says God’s wisdom has been hidden as a secret!

So, how are we supposed to gain wisdom if it’s a secret? One clue is to look to the resurrected Christ — he was emptied, humbled, and obedient to the Way of God. Following in the Way of Christ may look weak or lowly, but it is actually the powerful secret to growing in wisdom.

Pray

Wise God, help me to be curious about growing in wisdom, and curious about living like Jesus.

Amen.

Go

As you go today, remember that God is ready to share wisdom.

Reach out your hands and accept it.
