Journey to the Cross

Pause

What would change in your life if you felt that Jesus was with you?

Listen

He continued, “Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I am going in order to wake him up.”

The disciples said, “Lord, if he’s sleeping, he will get well.” They thought Jesus meant that Lazarus was in a deep sleep, but Jesus had spoken about Lazarus’ death.

Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died. For your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there so that you can believe. Let’s go to him.”

John 11:11-15

Think

I find a lot of inspiration in the disciples. Not only because of their experience following Jesus around and participating in God’s healing work in the world, but also because of their confusion… their un-belief. They walked with God for three years and still didn’t have all the answers. The Gospel lessons are full of the disciples “not having a clue,” or asking for additional clarification.

This text shows me that I am not always aware of what God is doing, and it shows how difficult it can be to trust in God.

The disciples don’t know what Jesus is up to. They expect him to act in a certain way.

Jesus answers their concern plainly: “Lazarus has died.” He is not sleeping. But pay attention, for things are about to get wild.

Pray

Dear Jesus, help me to trust you in the midst of all of life’s confusion, doubt, and death.

Help me to turn to you for answers, for purpose, and for strength.

Remind me of your love as I go about my day.

Amen.
