I wrote some of the worst poetry west from the Mississippi River, but I wrote. And I finally sometimes got it right.

Then Saul dressed David in his own gear, putting a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David strapped his sword on over the armor, but he couldn’t walk around well because he’d never tried it before. “I can’t walk in this,” David told Saul, “because I’ve never tried it before.” So he took them off.

1 Samuel 17:38-39

Think

Have you ever worn shoes that are a few sizes too big for your feet? When my daughter was about 3 years old, she loved to put on my sneakers and try to run around in them. Needless to say, it didn’t work too well and she would trip and fall! I can only imagine David wearing this oversized armor that was meant to protect him. Not only did he look ridiculous, he knew that it would prevent him from even walking, much less fight a giant!

Sometimes, we feel the pressure to be someone else other than our true self. We forget that each of us is made in God’s image and we do best when we live into that image. It takes time to get comfortable in our skin, but it’s important to be reminded that Jesus has set us free from societal expectations that try to limit us from living into the abundant life God promised.

Dear God, it was for freedom that Christ has set me free! Help me to fully accept myself as God’s good creation, capable of living the abundant life that reflects your love, justice, and mercy. Amen.
