When Jesus heard about John, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. When the crowds learned this, they followed him on foot from the cities. When Jesus arrived and saw a large crowd, he had compassion for them and healed those who were sick.

Matthew 14:13-14

Think

Jesus was in mourning. John the Baptist had been tragically killed by King Herod. When he heard the news, Jesus needed to be alone. However, even without social media, the news spread. In the midst of his grief, Jesus came upon a crowd in need. He had every reason to ignore them, yet Jesus saw them and was moved by their plight. He felt compassion.

The truth is that God is not indifferent to our needs. God sees us, God has compassion on us, and God responds. God’s blessing took the form of healing for the sick, but it began with the Messiah’s concern—he was moved to act on their behalf. Jesus continues to watch over us and to respond in accordance with the compassion that has been part of his character from eternity. The biblical blessing does not focus on material things, but on the God who sees us, is moved by our plight, and acts on our behalf.

Jesus, thank you for seeing me—just as I am, with everything around me. Help me to see others the way you see them. Amen.
