Ordinary Time

Pause

Created, seen, loved, entrusted, sent.

This is the relationship we have with the creator.

This is what God has done for us.

Listen

Jesus came near and spoke to them, “I’ve received all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.”

Matthew 28:18-20

Think

As the disciples stand gawking at Jesus on top of the mountain, seeing him for the first time since the resurrection, some are caught up in worship and others in doubt.

But Jesus doesn’t even address the fact that he is alive and not dead. Instead, he gives his disciples a mission: to go and teach others the lessons they have received from him.

If they thought they were having doubts before, this must have brought a whole new set of doubts. How can we do that? We’re not Jesus, and look what happened to him when he tried to share his message. Jesus offers the assurance that they will not be alone. He will be with them, sustaining them, and providing for them.

And Jesus makes that same promise to those of us who would seek to take up this call to share what we’ve received and learned from him. He sends us and also goes with us.

Question to Ponder:

How does it feel to think of yourself as a disciple called to share Jesus’ teachings with others?

Pray

Lord Jesus, you ask me to go. Help me to do so faithfully, sharing your teachings with others through my actions and words. Remind me that you are always with me. Amen.

Go

Go in safety, for you cannot go where God is not.

Go in love, for God’s love alone endures.

And go in peace, for that is God’s gift to those whose hearts and minds are in Christ Jesus.
