What can I give back to the Lord for all the good things he has done for me? I’ll lift up the cup of salvation. I’ll call on the Lord’s name. I’ll keep the promises I made to the Lord in the presence of all God’s people.

Psalm 116:12-14

When my son was born, my friend and pastor said, “Look at your son. Now remember that as you raise and care for him, he doesn’t belong to you. He belongs to God.” Wow!

At first, these words were startling. What do you mean this priceless human doesn’t belong to me? I’m his father! How can I care for this human that God has given me?

A few weeks later, my son was baptized by that same pastor, and we made lots of promises to God and to all the people. It has been hard and life-giving trying to keep them, and we have needed lots of help! We continue to promise to live, hear and share, proclaim, serve, and strive as we teach him to be a disciple of the Lord.

God, you have promised to never leave us alone and that your love never ends. Help me to make and keep the same promises for others. You are amazing. Amen.
