Back to School
Take a deep breath. As you inhale, breathe in God’s renewing hope, peace, and love.
As you exhale, release fear, pressure, doubt, and anxiety.
In this moment, remember: God is near, and you are not alone.
The Lord said, “Go out and stand at the mountain before the Lord. The Lord is passing by.” A very strong wind tore through the mountains and broke apart the stones before the Lord. But the Lord wasn’t in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake. But the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake. After the earthquake, there was a fire. But the Lord wasn’t in the fire. After the fire, there was a sound. Thin. Quiet.
1 Kings 19:11-12
Elijah had reached a breaking point. He was exhausted, discouraged, overwhelmed, and unsure what to do next. When God came near, Elijah expected something dramatic and unmistakable: powerful wind, earthquakes, or fire. But God’s voice arrived in silence instead.
That can feel strange in a world where louder often seems more important. We are surrounded by constant noise: music, videos, opinions, pressure, schedules, and expectations. Quiet can even feel uncomfortable. But often, renewal begins when we slow down enough to notice what has been there all along.
I live near Shenandoah National Park. One of my favorite things to do on a day off is to find an empty overlook and sit in the stillness. At first, the quiet feels unsettling, but after a few minutes, my mind settles, and peace slowly begins to return. I always go home feeling renewed and refreshed.
Maybe you’ve experienced that too: a quiet walk, a sunset, or a still moment at the end of a long day. Sometimes those are the moments when we become most aware of God’s presence. Don’t forget to make time for them in the rhythm of your week.

Question to Ponder:
When was the last time you experienced real quiet, and what did you notice in that moment?
God, help me slow down enough to notice your presence. Renew my heart in moments of stillness and quiet. Teach me to listen for your voice beyond all the noise around me. Amen.
Go into this day renewed in mind, heart, and spirit.
May you notice God’s presence in quiet moments, trust God through life’s storms, and journey with courage, compassion, and peace.
And may you remember that wherever you go, you are never alone.
