Right then, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead to the other side of the lake while he dismissed the crowds. When he sent them away, he went up onto a mountain by himself to pray. Evening came and he was alone.

Matthew 14:22-23

Think

Jesus is surrounded by crowds of people as he teaches and heals. He is exhausted. He sends the disciples away and goes up the mountain alone to pray and reconnect with God.

Jesus knew the importance of pausing before continuing. He knew that rest, quiet, and prayer were not distractions from life; they were part of what helped him stay grounded and renewed.

We live in a world filled with constant noise and attention-grabbing distractions. Phones buzz, schedules fill up, and our minds can feel crowded even when we are alone. Sometimes we move from one thing to the next without ever stopping long enough to breathe or reflect. It can be exhausting.

If we aren’t careful, all of our minutes can be filled with noise and distractions. We might feel so pressured to hang out with friends or add one more activity to our schedule that we don’t prioritize moments to rest and recharge. God can work through any situation. But when we step away from the noise, we give ourselves the space and opportunity to notice God’s presence, our own thoughts, and what really matters.

What distractions or noise make it difficult for you to slow down and reconnect with God, yourself, or others?

Pray

God, help me slow down and step away from the noise that fills my life. Renew my heart and mind in moments of quiet and rest. Teach me to make space for your presence each day. Amen.
