Listen

All of you who are thirsty, come to the water! Whoever has no money, come, buy food and eat! Without money, at no cost, buy wine and milk! Why spend money for what isn’t food, and your earnings for what doesn’t satisfy? Listen carefully to me and eat what is good; enjoy the richest of feasts. Listen and come to me; listen, and you will live.

Think

The global economy operates based on what we have. Everything has a cost, even when it claims to be free. The economy of the kingdom of God is completely different. It is not based on what we have or can bring to the table, but rests on God’s generous and abundant provision. In this world, our need can feel shameful. We don’t like to admit what we need or even that we need anything at all. In the kingdom of God, acknowledging our need is the prerequisite for drawing near to the one who generously says to us, “Come to me.”

What are we hungry or thirsty for? What do we need to help us feel fulfilled? God generously and freely gives us everything we need, starting with God’s own presence. Because, truly, if we have God, we have everything.

What are you looking for that only God can provide?

Pray

God, thank you for your abundant provision. Thank you for your generosity. Help me recognize my need and turn to you, the one who truly can satisfy me. Amen.
