Listen

Listen, my people, to my teaching; tilt your ears toward the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth with a proverb. I’ll declare riddles from days long gone—ones that we’ve heard and learned about, ones that our ancestors told us. We won’t hide them from their descendants; we’ll tell the next generation all about the praise due the Lord and his strength—the wondrous works God has done.

Think

In my family, I’ve heard certain stories so many times that I can almost recite them by heart. Some make us laugh, and others remind us of difficult times we managed to get through. Perhaps your family also has those stories that begin with, “When I was your age….” Even though we sometimes think, “I already know these!” those stories help us understand where we come from.

The psalmist also knew the value of storytelling. That is why he invites the people to listen and not to hide from the next generations what they have learned about God’s power and wonders. You, too, are part of a story. Perhaps someone told you about God, prayed with you, or stood by you when you needed it most. But the story doesn’t end there—now you can tell it. You don’t need a microphone, thousands of followers, or to know all the answers. With humility, you can share what God has done in your life. Your story can become a source of hope for someone else.

God, thank you for the people who have told me about your power. Help me to humbly share what you have done in my life. Amen.
