The Lord is good and does the right thing; he teaches sinners which way they should go. God guides the weak to justice, teaching them his way.

I once watched a person trying to do something they had never done before. Someone approached them to explain how to do it, but their immediate response was, “I know.” A few minutes later, they had to come back and ask, “Can you show me?” We’ve probably all experienced some version of that moment.

Saying “I don’t know” can be uncomfortable. We want other people to think we know what we’re doing. However, admitting that we need to learn doesn’t make us any less capable; it makes us humble.

The psalmist describes God as showing the way and guiding those who are humble. There is something special about that image: to receive guidance, we must first be willing to acknowledge that we need to be guided. Perhaps humility begins with three simple words: “I don’t know.” Then four more may follow: “Can you teach me?” God can use scripture, our experiences, and wise people to show us the way. Having power doesn’t mean knowing everything. There is also power in being willing to learn.

What do you need to acknowledge that you don’t yet know but are willing to learn?

God, I want to have a heart that is open to learning. Help me to listen to your guidance and humbly accept what I need to learn. Amen.
