Ordinary Time 
Pause
I take a deep breath and pause in God’s presence. I set aside my own haste and open my heart to let God’s truth guide me.
Listen
Then God spoke all these words:
I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You must have no other gods before me.
Do not make an idol for yourself—no form whatsoever—of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.
Exodus 20:1–4
Think
We often build silent idols without even realizing it: success, the approval of others, or absolute control. We turn them into false refuges that end up demanding more than they offer, trapping our spirit under heavy burdens. God does not call us to faithfulness through coercion, but through liberation.
Before giving us a single command, God reminds us who God is: the voice that breaks chains and leads us out of our own lands of slavery. The call to have no other gods is an invitation to rest in a love that demands neither masks nor merits. God dreams of us being free from everything that occupies a place that does not belong to it. By letting go of our idols, we regain the freedom to be fully who we are in God’s presence.
